In Nigeria, there is an upsurge in drug and substance abuse, and this is becoming a public health issue.
Substance abuse, according to the WHO, is the harmful or dangerous use of psychoactive substances, such as alcohol and illicit drugs.
The National Bureau of Statistics and the Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse in their survey in 2018 found that 14.3 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 had taken drugs in the previous year. This number shows a prevalence rate of 14.4%, suggesting a serious issue that needs immediate attention (NBS, 2018).
The most commonly abused drugs according to United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) are cannabis, tramadol, heroin, codeine, amphetamine/dexamphetamine and cough syrup. Drug abuse is most prevalent among those under the age of 35
The fight against drug abuse requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach involving government agencies, healthcare professionals, educators, and the general public. Some key measures that can be taken to tackle this issue include:
- Enhancing drug education and awareness programs in schools, colleges, and communities to educate individuals about the risks and consequences of drug abuse.
- The government should provide more employment opportunities to the youths and review existing drug laws to include stiffer penalties for offenders.
- Strengthening law enforcement efforts to disrupt the supply chain of illicit drugs, target drug traffickers, and reduce the availability of substances.
- Expanding access to affordable and quality rehabilitation and treatment centres, providing support and counselling to those struggling with substance abuse.
- Encouraging community engagement and support networks to assist individuals in their recovery journey and provide alternative opportunities for personal and economic growth.
- Promoting research and evidence-based policies to guide interventions and ensure effective strategies are implemented.
Individuals and stakeholders at all levels have critical roles to play in tackling drug and substance abuse in Nigeria. It is important to note that knowledge and awareness are powerful tools in combating drug abuse. Let’s join hands and make a positive difference in our communities. Together, we can build a healthier and drug-free Nigeria.
